Matched From Birth

In my new multi-chapter fanfic, both Legolas and Thranduil find love. It's set after the Lord of the Rings, during the time Legolas' establishes his new realm in Ithilien.

"Her heartbeat increased. Sweet Elbereth, what a sight for sore eyes! As a child he had been cute, and she had quite adored him, but this… This was different. He had become handsome."

Summary:

An arranged marriage to secure the succession could solve everything: Legolas' post-war melancholy, Lasriel's dream of freedom and a family, her mother's exile, King Thranduil's dark secret. But turning childhood friendship into love is not as easy as they thought - and neither is begetting an heir.

Pairings: Legolas x OC, Thranduil x secret character

Cat of the Fellowship: complete!

1,5 years and nearly 190,000 words later my third long fanfiction is completed! *happy dance*

Gosh, were they tall!
Of course, that was when she realized they were not big,
it was she who was small. “Miaow!” she cried in dismay.

Summary:

Unexpectedly turned into a cat, Kat falls into Middle-earth with the mission to prevent a death. In a feline form she can only communicate with the elf Legolas - and that he is such an attractive specimen is certainly not helpful...

A humorous adventure based on the book version of the Lord of the Rings.

Pairings: Legolas x OC, Boromir x Nellas

Rating: T

Watty Awards 2021 Shortlist

I'm really proud to announce that my story Rose in the Caribbean (formerly titles Afterlife) was one of 250 finalists in the 2021 Watty Awards! The winners will be selected December 3. Wish me luck. :)

Summary:

Rose sinks with the Titanic and is drawn into a strange adventure with a pirate named Jack Sparrow and a diamond heart. Saving her new friends Elizabeth and Will Turner proves to be dangerous, but falling for a dishonest man on rum withdrawal is even worse.

A humorous crossover between Pirates of the Caribbean and Titanic, but can be read without having seen any of them.

Rating: T

Dragon Deception

Today my story Dragon Deception was finally revealed! I wrote it for the Tolkien Reverse Summer Bang 2021, which is an event where artists submit art and writers use it as a prompt.

I’ve been super hyped to show my contribution. :D I finished it already in August and have been sitting on it since...

My story is based on a chapter in the Silmarillion, which I tweaked a little bit and added some divine intervention. It can be read 'fandom blind', without any prior knowledge of Tolkien's books.

It has a dragon… angst… drama… romance… and a happy ending eventually!

The art I chose is called "In the Wake of Glaurung" and was made by Zomburai, see below.

Summary:

Only Finduilas stands between Túrin and the doom the Dark Lord has intended for him, but before he can rescue her he must face Glaurung, Father of Dragons.

- A fix-it version of the Silmarillion events, where things don't go quite according to Morgoth's plans. :)

Pairings: Túrin x Finduilas, and Niënor x Brandir

One Year Fanfiction Anniversary!

Today, March 22, it's exactly 1 year since I published the first chapter of my first fanfiction: Horse Lady of Rohan (now retitled to "Riding With the Elves"). Since then I've written over 300 000 words of fanfiction, split into seven longer and shorter stories!

What began as a quarantine project has become my favorite hobby. Thank you, all readers who took the time to comment and review my work early in the process, or I might never have continued.

This calls for a celebration. :)

Terry Pratchett In Memoriam

“No one is actually dead
until the ripples they cause in the world die away.”

Sir Terry Pratchett (28 April 1948 - 12 March 2015)

Today, 6 years ago my favorite author died. Sir Terry Pratchett became 66 years old, and during his too-short life he wrote over forty amazing books, most of them parts of his Discworld series. Even when he developed Alzheimer's disease, he would keep writing, and though his later books are not entirely up to the same standard as those he wrote in his prime, they are still amazing books. He was just an extremely talented writer, who even with Alzheimer's could write smart, funny and thought-provoking stories.

Though set in a fantasy world, his characters are realistic and very deep, and the stories often mimic our world and problems, such as poverty, racism and gender inequality. This is done with humor and warmth, and often very subtly.

In addition he had a way with words, and the amount of cite-worthy quotes from his works is boundless. In my fanfiction Cat of the Fellowship I begin each chapter with a quote that fits the chapter's contents, and it's never hard to find one to match. The problem is rather choosing between the many options...

I shall end this In Memoriam with one of my favorite quotes:

Vimes 'Boots' Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness

The reason that the rich were so rich, Vimes reasoned, was because they managed to spend less money.

Take boots, for example. He earned thirty-eight dollars a month plus allowances. A really good pair of leather boots cost fifty dollars. But an affordable pair of boots, which were sort of OK for a season or two and then leaked like hell when the cardboard gave out, cost about ten dollars. Those were the kind of boots Vimes always bought, and wore until the soles were so thin that he could tell where he was in Ankh-Morpork on a foggy night by the feel of the cobbles.

But the thing was that good boots lasted for years and years. A man who could afford fifty dollars had a pair of boots that'd still be keeping his feet dry in ten years' time, while the poor man who could only afford cheap boots would have spent a hundred dollars on boots in the same time and would still have wet feet.

This was the Captain Samuel Vimes 'Boots' theory of socioeconomic unfairness.

A History of the Elves

I had a question from a reader about the branches of elves in Tolkien's writing, and who were called the Eldar. In the Silmarillion, there is a family tree casting some light over it (click to enlarge).

Source: Fort Marinus

The history of the division was this:

The elves were created by Eru Ilúvatar (God), and they were the fairest and wisest of his children. When they awakened on the young Arda (earth) and learned to speak, they called themselves the Quendi (speakers).

Later there was a war between the Valar (demigods) and the evil Vala Melkor (Morgoth), and afterwards the Vala Oromë decided to take the elves with him to Aman, a continent in the west where the Valar's realm Valinor was located. Oromë loved the elves, and it was he who named them the Eldar (people of the stars).

Some elves wished to stay in Middle-earth; those where called the Avari, and later Moriquendi (dark elves) because they never got to see the light of the Trees in Valinor.

Those who followed Oromë were three clans: the Vanyar, the Noldor and the Teleri.

During the journey, Oromë's path was blocked by the Misty Mountains, and he went ahead to create a path through them. But when he finally returned, some of the Teleri had come to like the place so much they wanted to stay. Those were called the Nandor, and settled in Greenwood (which was renamed Mirkwood in the Third Age).

A few of he Nandor later went through the Misty Mountains after all, but settled right on the other side of it, those were called the Laiquendi (Green elves). Those who remained in Greenwood became known as the Silvan.

Now Oromë and the elves still following him had come into Beleriand, a country that lay west of the Misty Mountains and later got destroyed. Here they again lost some elves, for a Teleri leader disappeared into the forest of Doriath (his name was Elu Thingol and the reason was - of course - a pretty girl: the Maia Melian). Those who remained to wait for him settled in Doriath and became the Sindar (Grey elves).

Meanwhile, Oromë and the Vanyar and the Noldor went to the coast, where Ulmo, the Vala of the Seas awaited them and ferried them over the ocean to Aman. But the remaining Teleri (those who were not waiting for Thingol in Doriath) had been dragging their feet, probably talking to trees, singing etc., and so when they finally arrived, they found that Ulmo's ferry had already departed.

The Teleri waited for him, but when he returned to pick them up, part of them had fallen in love with the coast and decided to stay in Middle-earth after all. Those were called the Falathrim, and their leader was Círdan Shipwright. Those who went to Aman were called the Falmari. Both these Teleri branches became great ship builders, and it was because of the Falmari's ships, the Noldor later caused the first Kinslaying (with elves killing other elves) when they wanted to return to Middle-earth.

Happy Valentine's Day! ♡

Today I give you three of my favorite Tolkien couples. :)

♡ Valentine N:o 1: Éowyn and Faramir
Image by Ratisbona (I could not find the source).

This is my favorite couple, both because they deserve happiness so badly after all they went through, but also because their relationship was so realistically formed. They met in the Healers' House, both recovering from wounds and regretting being unable to take part in the final battle against Sauron. Instead of falling madly in love at first sight (as everyone else in Tolkien's stories haha), they gradually get to know one another - and then there is love.

♡ Valentine N:o 2: Beren and Lúthien
Image by Sara Morello, Sa-Mo Art.

This is my second favorite couple despite all the trouble and grief surrounding their relationship. I love how stubborn Lúthien is when her father is against the match, and how bravely she saves her beloved's life at many occasions. In the end, he waits for her in the Halls of Mandos and they can be reunited and live a few happy years together.

♡ Valentine N:o 3: Aragorn and Arwen
Image by Sara Morello, Sa-Mo Art.

My third Valentine is another human-elf couple, who had to overcome many obstacles to get each other. Aragorn had to prove himself as a warrior for many years, winning honor among the Rohirrim and the Gondor people, as well as the Dúnedain, and become high king of the humans, before he could at last claim his bride at the mature age of 88 years. And she had to give up her immortality for his sake, and her chance to be reborn in Valinor. Beautiful and sad!

Winter Has Come

We seldom get such cold weather this far south... down to minus 10-15 degrees Celsius on some nights! And minus degrees during daytime as well. But it's beautiful, I have to give it that.

Today I shall spend mostly indoors in front of a fire, writing about the destiny of poor Túrin for my story Thranduil's Shadow.

Cat of the Fellowship - another Legolas story

Now that my pirates fic is completed, I felt an urge to write another humorous fic, and came up with an idea to write a story that follows the main arch of the Lord of the Rings trilogy - from the perspective of a cat!

Gosh, were they tall!
Of course, that was when she realized they were not big,
it was she who was small. “Miaow!” she cried in dismay.

Summary:

Sent to join the Fellowship of the Ring with a mission of her own, Kat certainly did not expect to be reborn as a cat! Saving someone's life in a feline form proves no easy task, especially when only the elf can understand her. That he is also a very good-looking specimen is not useful at all...

Pairings: Legolas x Kat (slowburn)
Follows book canon.

Saturday Bliss

Rainy October Saturday somewhere in southwestern Sweden. Hubby watches hockey, kids are in their rooms (using phones and/or computers probably) and I'm writing a new chapter for my Thranduil story, right now with Dynamite by Taio Cruz in my ears. Can't complain!

Rose in the Caribbean - Crossover Titanic/Pirates of the Caribbean

So, I just made another little fanfic, mostly for fun... Rose DeWitt Bukater drowns and finds herself in the 18th century Caribbean, on board the Flying Dutchman. Will Turner decides to take her to the one and only, Captain Jack Sparrow.

“The Heart of the Ocean!” he whispered.
“No wonder the Dutchman came for her!”

Summary

Rose sinks with the Titanic and is drawn into a strange adventure with a pirate named Jack Sparrow and a diamond heart. Saving her new friends Elizabeth and Will Turner proves to be dangerous, but falling for a dishonest man on rum withdrawal is even worse.

A humorous crossover between Pirates of the Caribbean and Titanic, but it's not necessary to have seen either movie to understand it.

Pairings:
Rose DeWitt Bukater x Jack Sparrow
Will Turner x Elizabeth Swann

It's Done!

I finally finished my first fanfic, Riding With the Elves (formerly titled "Horse Lady of Rohan")! 110 000 words written in less than 5 months. Thank you, quarantine...Writing fanfiction has been so fun, and this was definitely not my last story. Will continue my Thranduil story now!
